Chinese Art Class

Chinese brush painting is an ancient art where each brush stroke defines a move that produces a portion of the painting that is neither improved upon nor corrected. No sketch is prepared and no model is used. The artist paints with rapid, mentally constructed strokes transporting a 'mind image' to paper.

More than a representation of an object, Chinese brush painting is a symbolic expression. This is why a full plant is never painted, but rather a few blossoms which will represent the whole plant and in fact all of life - a TAO principle. Rather than looking at the subject as you paint, you bring it forth from your mind and heart and become part of nature.

Chinese brush painting of subjects such as flowers, birds, bamboo, orchid, and animals are taught in these classes. Chinese brush painting is a calming activity that centres the mind and releases stress.

This Chinese brush painting class involves introducing the students to the tools used in this type of artwork. The basic brush strokes for branches, bamboo leaves are demonstrated. After the students have practiced these strokes, they enjoy painting several compositions using these three brush strokes. The students are shown brush strokes that allow them to create various animals, insects and flowers. After a period of practice, the students are encouraged to use all the strokes to create more complex compositions.

Objectives
  • Introduce the students to a Chinese art form.
  • Help students be more aware of the quality of their own brush strokes and give them an opportunity to improve their strokes.

Please register your interest in attending this class, which will be arranged when we have enough numbers to keep the cost down.
